Wintercoats | Sketches EP [Cascine]

Typically, ambient musicians strive to make us feel something. The genre, “ambient”, describes a penultimate state of unconsciousness often achieved via airy melancholy or trance-inducing drone. Yet part of the appeal of Wintercoats’ music is that its near-flawless embodiment of these characteristics somehow feels pensive. The ironic, yet endearing, marriage of nebulous symphony and whimsical reflection is hardly a novel concept, but Melbourne native James Wallace has a unique ability to blur the lines between the traditionally distinct notions of feeling and thought. Lost and Safe-era Books and the Notwist at their most buoyant are ostensible (and endorsed) touchstones, and considering the project’s fairly recent conception, I’m looking forward to watching him grow into and cultivate his sound in the coming months. Until then, Sketches will serve as an appropriately colorful soundtrack to the impending change of the seasons.

Sketches EP is out now on Cascine.
